What is the Luxembourg–GLF Finance for Nature Platform?

Until recently, the financial sector has been slow to recognize the threat that unsustainable land use poses to climate change, biodiversity, water use, rural poverty and inequality. The Luxembourg–GLF Finance for Nature Platform aims to shift financial flows towards sustainable land use models that are sustainable, equitable, inclusive and profitable. This will not only boost economic returns but also help drastically increase funding to combat climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation.

Why a Luxembourg–GLF partnership?

Luxembourg is a global leader in sustainable finance and is ideally positioned to become a global hub for natural capital investing and nature-based solutions (NBS). The recently launched Luxembourg Sustainable Finance Strategy and Luxembourg Sustainable Finance Initiative (LSFI) aim to acceleration much-needed sustainable finance innovations.

Similarly, the GLF is committed to sharing knowledge and best practices on sustainable land use finance and value chains. Building on the 4th GLF Investment Case Symposium in Luxembourg in 2019, the GLF and the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg have launched a longer-term partnership that will initially run between 2021 and 2024.

Activities

The Luxembourg–GLF Finance for Nature Platform aims to catalyze and accelerate the mainstreaming of sustainable finance and the development of innovative finance instruments to address the climate crisis.

The Platform operates as a critical catalyzer for nature-based solutions financing worldwide, while promoting Luxembourg innovations, initiatives and projects. Through knowledge management, communications, learning and capacity-building activities, we aim to share and promote best practices to scale up appropriate financing models for REDD+, ecosystem-based adaptation, climate-smart agriculture, ecosystem restoration and sustainable supply chains.

Activities implemented in the framework of the partnership include:

Jointly preparing relevant knowledge management and communications initiatives with Luxembourg partners.
Designing and organizing physical, digital, and blended events in Luxembourg, including webinars, workshops, online conferences.
Engaging with key Luxembourg organizations to help them increase their engagement with sustainable finance.
Designing publications, policy and technical briefs, news articles, fact sheets and other resources with Luxembourg-based organizations.

Beneficiaries

In close coordination with the Luxembourg Sustainable Finance Initiative (LSFI), the platform seeks to support organizations, including from Luxembourg, that could benefit from increased engagement in nature-based solutions to climate change, especially in the Global South.

We aim to ensure that our activities include and serves the perspectives and needs of communities in low-and middle-income countries, which represent the majority of the GLF’s digital audience.
